Have you ever wondered why you react to certain situations the way you do? Or why some people seem to handle life’s challenges effortlessly while others struggle? The answer often lies in a fascinating chain reaction that starts with our beliefs and ends with our mood and actions.
The Belief-Mood Chain Reaction
Let’s break it down.
- Beliefs. These form the foundation of our mental framework.
- Thoughts. Our beliefs shape the thoughts that enter our minds.
- Emotions. These thoughts trigger specific emotional responses.
- Feelings. Our emotions manifest as physical sensations in the body.
- Mood. The accumulation of these feelings creates our overall mood.
This chain reaction can work for or against us, depending on the situation and the nature of our beliefs. For example, if you believe you’re capable of overcoming challenges, you’re more likely to face difficult situations with confidence and resourcefulness. On the other hand, if you believe you’re not good enough, the same situations might provoke anxiety and self-doubt.
Disrupting the Flow: Getting to the Root Cause
To create positive change, we must disrupt this flow at its source—our beliefs. But how are these beliefs formed in the first place?
Beliefs are shaped by our experiences and perceptions, filtered through our unique mental lenses. These lenses are influenced by our past, culture, education, and personal values, coloring how we interpret the world.

This question has been a game changer for me.

Once you’ve identified a belief that no longer serves you, you have the ability to change it. This might sound simple, but it’s profoundly transformative—you can literally create a new belief to replace the old one. How empowering is that?
For example, if you’ve always believed, “I’m not good at public speaking,” you can choose a new belief like, “I’m continuously improving my public speaking skills.” When reinforced, this new belief can reshape your thoughts, emotions, and performance in public speaking situations.
The Art of Asking Better Questions
To uncover the deeply held beliefs and hidden mental filters, we need to master the art of asking better questions. This involves:
- Open-ended questions. Instead of yes/no questions, ask “how” and “why” to dive deeper.
- Challenging assumptions. Question everything, especially long-held beliefs.
- Exploring different perspectives. Look at situations from multiple angles.
- Being curious. Approach self-discovery with genuine interest and openness.
Here are some questions to get started.
– What must I believe to feel this?
– What belief is holding me back in this situation?
– How would I approach this if I knew I couldn’t fail?
– What would someone I admire do in this situation?
– What’s another way to look at this challenge?
By consistently asking better questions and challenging our existing beliefs, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and personal growth. This ongoing process of self-discovery can lead to profound changes in how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.
