Is There an Art to Letting Go?
read
In last week’s blog, I shared some thoughts about transitions and offered a few coaching tips on how to embrace them. One key point was the ‘art of letting go.’ This concept feels especially relevant in a world that seems to be moving faster than ever, constantly pushing us to question long held beliefs and personal truths. Whether it’s the unrest we see on the global stage—countries at war, industries in upheaval—or the challenges closer to home, like the impact of shifting values on our schools and children, it’s hard to escape the feeling that things are changing in ways we can’t control.
So, is there really an art to letting go?
The answer lies in how we relate to control. Letting go is not about surrendering or giving up on the things that matter. Instead, it’s about acknowledging that while we can’t always control external events, we do have control over our internal landscape—our thoughts, emotions, and responses. And therein lies the art: learning to release what’s beyond our control so we can focus on what truly is within our grasp.
Letting go begins with your beliefs. Whether you believe things are manageable or overwhelming, you’re right. Your beliefs shape your emotions, and those emotions influence your mental and physical state. If you’re feeling anxious, unsettled, or less than your best self, it’s a signal to get curious. Ask yourself: “What must I believe to be true in order to feel this way?”
When you question your beliefs, you open the door to understanding why you feel what you feel. Are your beliefs shaped by the constant negativity of the news cycle? By the biases and opinions of those around you? Remember, your beliefs are unique to your experience, filtered through the lens of your perception. But here’s the truth—beliefs are fluid. You can change them simply by choosing to see things differently. That’s the true essence of empowerment, yes?
The art of letting go isn’t about ignoring what’s happening around you. It’s about choosing not to let external chaos define your inner world. It’s about deciding how you want to experience life, even when it feels overwhelming. Letting go means releasing the illusion of control over things outside yourself, while actively focusing on what is within your control – your reactions, your mindset, and your sense of peace.
Mastering the art of letting go is a practice. It’s not a one-time decision but a continuous process of self awareness and choice. Life will always present challenges, uncertainties, and sometimes, even chaos. But through the practice of letting go, you learn to rise above it—not by surrendering, but by choosing how you navigate through it with clarity and intention.
So, is there an art to letting go? Absolutely. And like any art, it’s one that gets better with practice.
Ask yourself today: What are you ready to let go of? That may be your first step toward living with more ease, clarity, and freedom in your own life.
